Rather than "trim" I did an experiment with the newish search-replace 
operator  <https://tiddlywiki.com/#search-replace%20Operator>

{{{ [<url>search-replace:gi:regexp[^ 
*(https?://(www\.)?|ftp:///|file:///.+/|news:|mailto:|\$:.+/)],[]] }}} 

*Still in testing!* It needs work yet. BUT the advantage is you can 
truncate links for "title" *according to each case*.

It seems to work better for local links ...
