It turns out that the fix for this problem requires a patch to serial.o
in
the 2.2.x and 2.4.x kernels. It turns out the card overflows the serial
buffer space habitually. Fortunately there is a nice web site where
this is figured out. Once I applied the patch and refreshed my memory
on building the kernel (don't laugh, I don't go there that often), it
worked fine. No more freezing up. Here is the site with the technical
