I figured out one of my problems. It's the problem with odd point/pixel sized helvetica fonts. The problem was that there is no matching bitmap font and no scalable helvetica font and the font server config file put the 75dpi directory at the end of the search path without an ":unscaled" flag. This last resort causes it to scale the bitmap font which is not real good.
