Just to wrap this up from a TB perspective, we've taken the TB's consensus to be what Marc suggested in this thread, and this was discussed at the TB meeting of 26 January[0]. We further agreed in that meeting that we would like the decision to be documented, but left open exactly how that would happen.
Olivier and I worked together on some documentation and Olivier posted this to Discourse[1] yesterday. Wearing my SRU team hat, I've been working on a few review iterations on the updated packages with Olivier, and should be able to land this soon into focal-proposed and then, assuming SRU verification goes well, into focal-updates.
