I don't personally use spideroak, but I care about privacy. Since you ask, and full disclosure my company is a competitor of spideroak, somebody here will probably accuse me of bashing our competitor or promoting our own stuff, here's my story: Today, I wanted to add the quote "Saying you don't care about privacy because you have nothing to hide is like saying you don't care about having free speech because you have nothing to say" on cbcrypt.org. I believed this quote was from Snowden, and I was searching around for this quote, in order to quote it correctly and attribute it correctly. I couldn't find it, but while searching, I saw some quotes from him about spideroak, and saw some news sources announcing that spideroak was going to join Canary Watch. This ran contrary to my prior knowledge, so I wanted to look into it more. I had previously (like a year ago) searched for their canary page, concluded that it didn't exist, and speculated as described in my other email a moment ago, that maybe they had decided not to put one up because they thought it would be damaging to themselves. So when I saw the news articles about spideroak will put up a canary page ... I needed to look into it more. I found their canary page, and thought, "WTF is this?" I seriously thought, "This makes no sense, am I reading it wrong? Can I ask this question on stackexchange? No, this is more of a LOPSA question." Their canary page "everything's fine" doesn't answer the question of whether or not they handed anything over to the feds, as a result of Snowden using their service. In the end, I was able to find the correct Snowden quote, and put it up on cbcrypt. "Arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say.” - Edward Snowden _______________________________________________ Tech mailing list Tech@lists.lopsa.org https://lists.lopsa.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/tech This list provided by the League of Professional System Administrators http://lopsa.org/
