well, considering that it wouldn't hit disk, in my homebrew setup, until/unless it reached the threshold, a ram disk wouldn't make a difference either way.
My router is quagga on an e3 xeon, so I'm pretty sure a reasonable xeon could pcap to ram at line-rate.
I mean, all this would be an issue if I had a fast link, but my link maxes out at 1gbe, so I don't think speed is an issue so much as me wanting a 'standard' solution rather than whatever buggy crap I can knock together.
