I think you should split this into two options. Get a Brother MFC
laser printer for the wife's business. Keep her happy. I've had one
for over eight years now and I've replaced the toner twice? Kids are
happy too, they treat the paper tray as the source of all blank paper
in the house. They don't understand the elf that fills it for
them... :-)

Copies, scans, does duplex and even (shock!) offers Fax support which
I've only used twice in my life. MFC-8840DN is what I have I'm pretty
sure. Nice printer.

If the actor son nees head shots, it's cheaper to have a good print
made at CVS/Costco/photo shop, isntead of trying to get a good
inkjet. Maybe I'm still burned on the 10+ year old Canon inkjet I
bought to do photos, but which just sucked no matter what. It was
cheaper and higher quality to get them printed, esp when you can
upload the photos to their site and have them waiting for you.

The Brother's are also good because they have nice linux support as
well, you can download the drivers on their site.

unix> Budget: $300 max, $150-$200 expected
