A reliable multi-function printer for $300? Not possible.

My recommendation is the Brother MFC-9970CD. I purchased one for my
wife's office, it has printed *everything* - even the most brain-damaged
PDF form @&^&@$ crap I've thrown at it. Stuff that would kill any
Kyocera or our previous HP. And the scanning always works well. Have
really zero complaints about this printer, which is a first - for any
printer I've had to live with.

But it is twice your price point - which is where you need to be for
anything that just-always-works.
