With a quick Google, there seem to be several XML Editors available
for various platforms.  Some validate the schema as editing is
occuring.

I don't find editing them with vi or notepad to bad, but if doing a
significant amount editing, it can be a pain.  So I see the desire to
have something as simple as flat flies to edit.  XML isn't perfect,
but it could be worse.

As a programmer, many languages have free XML parsers available so it
is easier for programmers than saying they are going to read a config
or ini file.
