I consulted with Symantec some years ago on their Norton Anti-Virus for
Internet E-mail Gateways, and I have some knowledge of their Brightmail product.

NAVIEG was a good idea at the time, but no one in the company knew squat about
anything other than Microsoft (an issue that has never really changed), so they
outsourced development to a company in India, and that process did not go well.
Although the code technically ran, it wasn't translated into a proper Unix
mode of operation, they just did the absolute minimum necessary changes to get
the code to compile on the "other" platform. I don't think it ever really went
anywhere beyond working as an additional piece of software running alongside
Microsoft Exchange under Windows NT.

With regards to Brightmail, they had a good initial concept, but all the good
work and the good developers got tossed out when they discovered that it was
just too expensive to continue to develop and maintain the product as it was
originally conceived. Humans are just too expensive for them.
