It's been solved already - it's in pkgsrc.
I find it a little bit overkill to replace ls with gls and in some cases
it doesn't work (gnu ps on NetBSD? color-vmstat?).
I am not objecting to implementing colorls (in whatever form), just
requesting that the default is, and will remain, OFF.
Right it should be disabled by default and we could make Clang/LLVM and
other programs to respect getenv("COLORTERM"). I would like to have it
consistently supported in all applications.
We digressed from "colored ls" to "colored compiler output" during our
discussion....
I don't have a problem with the color support per se, as long as it's
turned off by default. And stays that way. But I very much fear that it
will be enabled by default sometimes in the future. If you don't believe
me, I'm going to forward this email to you when it happens. Will be a
sad day, though.
And, "COLORTERM" is not enough. What if you want different color schemes
schemes for different programs? It's more to it.
I still don't understand what's the problem with installing colorls from
pkgsrc. If it doesn't work correctly, fix it. I really don't see the
need to have this capability in base.
