Hi Eleanor It is unlocked but I think the network here has stopped me sending text messages, can't think why and I haven't the energy to ring them to look into it, it is an english phone, it is an o2 sim, which is possibly why it isn't working, I thought about swapping sims but I don't want to mess up my french phone in casde it causes further problems.

If UK sim then Roaming which is more expensive but finally do you know if the phone is unlocked?
