Touch screens do recognize several simultaneous touches. On the iPhone, there are multiple gestures involving several fingers. The iPhone also knows whether you're touching the top, bottom, left or right side. I don't think there are any technical reasons why what you're proposing couldn't be implemented.
What you're describing sounds a little like the Type in Braille app for the iPhone. It also reminds me a little of the Mobile Speak interface for the touch screen PDA's. I'm not sure if it used simultaneous touches, but it did divide the screen up into four quadrants, so you just needed to touch one of those quadrants instead of knowing exactly where to touch.
