Hi steven,
unfortunately your suggestion didn't work, because when you hit soft key 1, I assume because both programs are running at the same time, it didn't let you press soft key 1. I actually found the solution though, so I post it hear in case anyone else has the same issue in the future. I in the end had to put mobile speak into stylus mode, with the mobile speak command key and repeated presses of the volume up switch. after that, I then navigated to the talks area using the physical keyboard, and it came up talking.
I was then able to go to options and enable talks.
I think the problem is that in all the modes other than stylus mode which mostly doesn't read anything, mobile speak takes control of the touch screen and changes its layout, which of course talks won't like as it doesn't change the layout of the screen. in the end I wasn't able to figure out how to make a call with mobile speak, because I couldn't get its gestures to work for making a call and hanging up, in fact help mode didn't even recognise them when I tried to make them to see if I was getting it right.
