this can absolutely be done between a 2nd edition and 3rd edition phone.
You may not be able to transfer everything though.
i am not refering to the phone switch method, because i know very well
that this method will not work for transfering messages from
3rd edition to 2nd edition phone, but however, there are other solution to
solve his problem and keep those messages intact.
