I concur with what you say but I did upgrade 3 phones thus far and an very
pleased with the result of N 95 and e7. Just some hiss on e5 but this is
improved by reducing the volume though it is still there, not so irritating
though.

Well, it's a judgment call, but I've been using Talks since it was a
beta in 2003, and I don't think the response is much different than
previous releases of Talks. In fact, if you don't update Eloquence, it
seems like most of the negative response has to do with specific
features that weren't implemented or bugs that weren't fixed, which is
pretty typical whenever a software application is updated. Just as with
any product, I'm sure the list of bugs and features is more than enough
to swamp the resources of the development team, so priorities have to be
set, work has to be estimated and decisions have to be made. Obviously,
not everyone is going to like every decision.

For my part, I'm still happy with my old E71X, and after looking through
the read me file for this release, I still haven't gotten around to
updating my version of Talks. There isn't a lot here to compel me to
upgrade, but I'm OK with that. The E71X is an older platform, and I
don't have any major complaints.

In looking at the read me file, I see that it says the following about
the new version of Eloquence:

. Eloquence 6.1.125: this version uses 16kHz audio output on all
phones. This both improves compatibility (for example making speech during a
call possible on Symbian^3 phones) and audio quality. In addition, this
version fixes crashes seen with the US English version packaged in the
previous TALKS releases.

There are now two installation packages available for US English, one called
Eloquence_enu_dct_6_1_125.sisx which contains an extended pronunciation
dictionary, and one called Eloquence_enu_6_1_125.sisx without the
dictionary, leading to somewhat higher speed and lower memory consumption.

Granted, it sounds like Nuance made a mistake releasing this version of
Eloquence, but the way I read it, unless you're using a Symbian^3 phone,
or you're having problems with Eloquence crashing, there isn't much
reason to move up to 6.1.125. Also, if you find you don't like this
version of Eloquence, is there any reason you can't move back to version
6.1.123?

I agree it would be nice if the developers had the time to answer every
email and participate actively in this list, but Nuance has chose to
invest two engineers (the last I knew) into Talks. If they had to spend
their time responding to every email and participating actively in the
list then we'd get even fewer features implemented and even fewer bugs
fixed with each release. I'm convinced the Talks team knows about these
issues.

Everyone will have to make their own decision on whether to move to a
new platform or not. I know I'm tempted for many reasons that others
have expressed on this list. The good thing is that we have other
choices. I remember when Talks was the only screen reader available on
any smartphone platform, and I don't think Blackberry or Winndows Mobile
accessibility was ever as good as what we're seeing with Talks or on the
iPhone or Android platforms. I'm not saying we should be happy with our
lot or that we shouldn't complain when we dont get what we want, but I
also think we should refrane from exaggerating on how bad things are.
