Ok Stephen, I'll give this a go tonight. Think it's ok to back up settings
as well, or should I limit it to just contacts and calendar? 
Also, would you advise a hard reset or a full-blown format?

OK! Michelle that is your problem. If you are having issues! That isn't the
time to back up your phone. The reason why is you are backing up the problem
as well. Then when you restored the phone! You also restored the issue.

Yes if you can only backup the Contacts and Calendar! Then you need to
format the phone and at that point you should be able to then restore the
Contacts and Calendar.

Yes you will loose all  of your messages but the problem should go away.
