I am not Stephen but speaking from experience with nokia maps since my
navigator 6210 and now C5 ovi map.
in mobilespeak, pressing 8 will read the distance left to your destination
and which direction to turn.
Visually its there but talks don't read them.
Even if talks see the icon or image there, its not quite reliable just to
label them.
