Aha, thanks so much for this comparison.

Subject: Re: [Talks] Voice over versus talks

Also, VoiceOver is a native part of the OS, so you're guaranteed that every part of the phone is accessible when you receive it. The gestures are modified somewhat to make it easier to interact with the phone by touch, but there are no specific screen reader commands to learn. Not every third party app is accessible, however, but there are more accessible apps for the iPhone than for symbian, and Apple has made an accessibility guide available to developers. On the other side of the coin, TALKS is more customizable than VoiceOver. VoiceOver lacks a custom pronunciation dictionary, an equivalent to the Object Viewer to allow the user to try to render inaccessible parts of applications more accessible, and other basic screen reader settings such as the ability to control how numbers are spoken and how much punctuation is spoken. It really is like comparing apples to oranges. Someone who has used a Symbian-based touchscreen phone with TALKS, as well as an iPhone with VoiceOver, would be better equipped to compare the two.

Its very hard to compare the too. For me, Voice Over is clearer but, it
could be the pitch of the female voice that is used. Talks voice is
identical to my JAWS voice so was not a problem to get used to. I have
noticed that my daughter doesn't turn off Voice Over on the phone as she did Talks. Whether it is the way the phone runs with the voice running or its
listenability, (is that a word?) I don't know.
