It would help if Marc_marc could post the image of the traffic sign which originated the thread (or the image of an equivalent sign) and tell the country where it is placed. Then a user with local expertise could chime in, and we could decide if the wiki needs clarification.
Where I live, two different kind of maxweight signs exist, each one with its own meaning: either maximum allowed weight on road segment, or maximum vehicle rated weight. I have seen exceptions only for the latter. Maybe emergency vehicle might make exceptions to the first, assuming any responsibility in case of mishap, Im not sure.
