But i want to add here that the statement cited above is simply wrong.  
There are lots of ways you can style maritime boundaries differently - 
some of them are difficult using the tool chain currently used by 
OSM-Carto, others come with design restrictions - just like the status 
quo in the style or the method you are planning to use.  But the idea 
that this approach is without good alternatives is a misapprehension of 
the situation.
