I'm trying to determine the ideal tagging scenario for the many oil fields in the State of Alaska. The areas, which are large tracts of land leased from the State of Alaska, are typically very large (50-100 sq miles) and are mostly empty except for a few installations containing wellsites or pumping facilities for the raw petroleum. Consequently, all those installations are part of some larger leased and named tract.
An example is ConocoPhillips's Colville River Unit (aka Alpine Field or Alpine Oil Pool) that I've very roughly sketched here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=12/70.3432/-151.0170 (you might have to zoom in/out to get an idea of its size). The sketch is merely a rough approximation and is based on a PDF of the area from a State of Alaska document (possibly copyrighted). I did not use a boundary tag because the boundary I've drawn is very rough. My intent was only to use it as a container for the facilities it contains. One concern is that I use landuse=indistrial for both the lease and those "internal" facilities. So, inside this leased tract are oil well sites, (one of which is here: 70.4189462, -150.9128577) and a larger pumping/aggregating site known as the Alpine Central Facility (70.3445186, -150.9244295). Information about the Alpine Central Facility (ACF) was gleaned from ConocoPhillips Internet sites, newspaper articles, etc. My current tagging for the ACF is: industrial=wellsite is_in=Colville River Unit landuse=industrial name=Alpine Central Facility operator=Conoco-Phillips Alaska And for the Colville River Unit lease: alt_name=Alpine Field fixme=boundry is approximate landuse=industrial name=Colville River Unit operator=ConocoPhillips Alaska The tags I've used are probably okay but perhaps there is someone on this list who specializes in such areas and who might, for the sake of consistency, offer some suggestions. My aim, in part, is to use the "is_in" tag to indicate within which tract or lease any particular facility resides. Alternatively, perhaps this discussion would be more suitable for the Talk-US list.
