Any reason why you would prefer produce=chilli_pepper over produce=chili? Generally, (not directly as an answer to you), subtagging with genus etc are nice, but I am seeing this out of the perspective of the surveyor.
While a surveyor can surely distinguish apples from bananas, he may not be able to distinguish Jonathans from Granny Smiths. And the same holds for capsicum: He will be able to distinguish bell pepper from chili, but not Jalapeno from Cayenne. So, to the surveyor, it is absolutely irrelevant whether two commonly known crops belong to the same biological genus or not but whether these are distinguishable and commonly known as a different type of thing.
