e.g. black pepper corns could be “produce=pepper”, “variety=black_corn”.

subtab is very useful to have usable datas with a level of detail that
depends on the need.

While I am generally in favour of subtagging, it would be insufficient here for distinguishing the spice from the vegetable. Tod only gave the example for the black spice. Piper nigrum and Capsicum are not varieties of the same thing.

That's why the original poster proposed _produce=bell_pepper_ which however seems to be AmE, so the BrE equivalent would be _produce=sweet_pepper_.

So the current definition would be:

* produce=pepper
  Spice (black, white, green peppercorns) harvested from the Piper nigrum plant.

* produce=sweet_pepper
  Vegetable from Capsicum annuum. Not spicy (containing insignificant amounts
of Capsaicin).

* produce=chilli_pepper
Fruit of plants from the genus Capsicum, produced for their spiciness from significant amounts of Capsaicin, with their heat measured on the Scoville scale.

Now you can of course add variety=Habenero;Jalpeno;Red Cubanelle etc.
