I tag sports that have some infrastructure on the ground .. thus I don't use
sport=multi but rather the actual sport that has some markings/goal post that
are present.
For the same reason I don't tag informal sports that are played on grass fields
without formal marking ..
e.g. a soccer game played informally - goal posts and corners marked out with
the players jumpers. To me that is not a pitch, just any grassed area.
As for damage to areas... I have seen many soccer fields, cricket pitches with
substantial damage after the season is over.
I don't think any one sport is free of the damage problem.
But it is a local issue, with local decisions, like banning dogs. Possibly
could be tagged along the same lines as other access issues?

The field is standard grass pitch- they just don't accept the eventual damage
that American football (and rugby, sometimes) causes because of people pushing
against each other while wearing cleats. This makes a muddy patch in the
centerline of the field, as opposed to Soccer, where people just run around.
They even use our local pitch as a firefighter helicopter refilling spot, so
helicopters are okay too!
So the field isn't fragile (any more than any other grass pitch), cleats are okay, and
usage is encouraged - but "pitch destroying" sports are forbidden, as the
damage is not seen as an acceptable tradeoff to allowing American Football playing, as it
would be in America.
