In Berlin a typical simple subway station consists of stairs towards the two ends of the platform, a lift somewhere in between, ticket machines on the platform and no barriers when open. Quite effective btw., queuing at the barriers is the last thing you'd want when you're already in a rush ;-) I'm not sure for all cities, but I think you won't typically find barriers in German subways and light rails. > Entrances also need opening hours, some are not open at weekends or > late in the evening. yes, or are not open at night on weekdays.
