okay, thanks for all the input. I think nobody said that we should use the word island or traffic island for an area that is just marked with paint.
Now what do we call this area? I think it is not a highway=* or a surface=* or a landuse=* I think it is a traffic_calming=* , but I have no idea about the tag value.
