With current tagging scheme for airports there is no reliable method to
decide whatever
something is a major airport (serving a big city) or a small unimportant
barely used one
(grassy field with a shed).

It would be highly useful to start using tagging method that would allow it.

Considered methods:

- check area of tagged element - but most aeroway=aerodrome are tagged as
nodes
- check for presence of icao or iata tag - but some really small airports
have this codes
- whether the name or name:en tags contain clue words such as
"international"
or "heliport" - but it is an ugly hack and heuristic, not a reliable
solution
- check aerodrome key - but it is not widely used
( http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/aerodrome )
- a new tag like [regular_commercial_traffic=yes] (but it would be
necessary to start using it)

None of this method really works - and I would ask people tagging airports
to consider
- tagging aeroway=aerodrome elements as areas, not as nodes
- using aerodrome key (also - verify whatever it is a good and usable idea)
- introducing new key that would allow to decide whatever airport is
important or not

See https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/issues/1143 for
details.

See http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=10/39.6554/-86.3896 for area where it
is
a major problem.
