One option is the same way that people mapped before GPSs arrived - accurately measure a baseline and triangulate from it. Obviously it's substantially harder to do in a confined space with low light than elsewhere.
These days you might also be able to make some use of the accelerometer 
in some mobile phones.  See also here:
