They got replaced. But I admit it was less common than I thought. Just happened to click on one of those.
There is not even one amenity=church_yard or churchyard (the latter being the correct spelling). Maybe you are confusing this with amenity=graveyard? These are burial places on sacred ground aside a church (as opposed to cemetery). IMHO if these (fenced) areas are on sacred ground, amenity=place_of_worship should extend to there.
