http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:shop%3Dcar however uses
operator and brand differently. But we're changing this usage of
operator to brand, so to keep the distinction we need to change brand
to something else.

That seems reasonable. Mercedes-Benz is the brand of what's being
sold, not the brand of the dealership itself (although some car
companies may open up stores in their own name; then brand would be
appropriate). On the other hand McDonald's is the brand of the
restaurant as well as of some of the food being sold there.
