I myself use the same technique - independent to Bibledit.

FWIW, it readily facilitates doing a global search, which is great to check
for anomalies,
to extract items using a certain tag or tag pair,
or for other kinds of analysis such as character frequency counts.

I'm surprised that multiple \id lines in a file didn't work just fine in usfm2osis.py. The regex handler for \id looks for the end of the file or another instance of \id, but was completely untested.
