Hi John!

Actually, I don't know what other noises as the ones of the fans, I will hear there. But I expect it to be the most dominant. I hope to persuade the technicians there to produce a very rare and seldom noise: The powering up of a Z. ;-). But this will be a hard piece of work.

I would love (!) to use a Schoeps double M/S, there is only one little detail hindering me from doing so: I don't have any Schoeps. :-( So, I will have to stick to my "guns" and use my AKGs Blue Series. One has to play his giften cards!

I was recommended to use a ESMA (Equal Segmented Microphone Array) a really nice system, but this is not possible due to security constraints in the datacenter. The diameter of 1.2 m would block the ways for reaching the emergency exits on time, so this is not an option. (safety first!)
I tried a ESMA setup and it sounds very well, but ...
Meanwhile, I got myself a contact microphone to attach it to a rack and record the vibrations as well. ;) The H3-VR is an option to think about. Effordable, very small and the sound is okay.

Of course, I will share the recordings afterwards and I already got the permission to do so from IBM.

I'll keep you posted.

Thorsten,

I think the question is rather more what sort of noise do you hope to capture:
will it not just be more or less white/pink noise? I’ve recorded in computer
rooms in the past and the overwhelming sound is of the aircon/refrigeration
units and internal cooling fans. As far as I can see, the Quantum computer
operates in a super-cold environment, so I guess the cooling system is what
you’re going to get most of, which may or may not be interesting. Personally,
I’d go for a Schoeps double M/S set-up and keep something dead simple like a
Zoom H3-VR handy as well, just in case. Also, who knows what sort of electrical
radiation these things put out: you may find that any useable sound is wiped
out by all-encompassing electrical interference, although I really hope that’s
not the case. What recorder will you be using?

I’ll be interested to hear the results, regardless, and best of luck whatever
you end up with.

All the best,

John

Hi all!

But what would you choose to record these machines?
a) native AmbiX-B-format microphone system
b) double M/S
c) regular ORTF
d) regular XY
e) some combinations? (please choose)

I just bought some contact microphones, just for fun. Let's see where this will
get us. :-)
