Hi Dave, Its something I did at Glastonbury Festival at the Shangrai La in 2013 (diagram 20m diameter) - its works fantastically well - with sounds coming from outside the array towards you in the middle (the small ring was inside a yurt) .I used Vbap for this though (bite me) - however Matt Montag used a similar technique for creating Wavefield synthesis with height by amplitude panning between two WFS arrays - should work for ambisonics as well.
