It seems that the mini XLRs are OK, but just OK, but suspending the
phantom power eliminators has caused problems for users? I've used
mini XLRs in lots of projects for more than 25 years and found them
to be OK. There are lots of different manufacturers now, as opposed
to back then, and thus some of them are not as good as others. And
mini XLRs as opposed to regular XLRs don't inspire confidence. They
tend not to make a really positive contact when snapped into the
socket.

As for regular XLRs, there are no 8-pin XLRs. At least I don't know
of any. And 6-pin and 7-pin XLRs are very rare. I can't get them in
the type that I prefer.

What sort of multipin connectors do folks here like?

lemo (for use, not for soldering :), and for some applications, RJ45 in a neutrik ethercon. the latter gives you four pairs plus shield, and the locking mechanism and strain relief are solid enough to hang a microphone by its cable.
