Others have mentioned Trifield.  The definitive
paper for this is:

The key content is Figure 16; the shelf filters
have different gains above and below 5 kHz.

In this paper, MAG argues strongly that
augmenting the existing L and R channels with
an additional C channel will not produce good
results.  Instead, he suggests that it is better to
derive three new L, C, R output channels from
the L, R input channels.
