Others have mentioned Trifield. The definitive paper for this is: M.A. Gerzon, "Optimum Reproduction Matrices for Multispeaker Stereo", J. Audio Engineering Society, vol. 40 no. 7/8, pp. 571-589 (1992 July/Aug.) This in available in the Ambisonic Motherlode at: http://decoy.iki.fi/dsound/ambisonic/motherlode/data/1991_Optimal%20Reproduction%20Matrices%20for%20Multispeaker%20Stereo%20(TRIFIELD)_Gerzon.pdf The key content is Figure 16; the shelf filters have different gains above and below 5 kHz. In this paper, MAG argues strongly that augmenting the existing L and R channels with an additional C channel will not produce good results. Instead, he suggests that it is better to derive three new L, C, R output channels from the L, R input channels.
