A sample or two difference (which I would say is to be expected) isn't going to matter much but all current converters that I am aware of use sigma-delta converters which, because of their internal dsp filtering, can have significant (mS level) delays. Even without taking buffering delays into account, this could be problematic. Having said that, modern chips have very much reduced this but, nevertheless, I would definitely run some impulses through to check for potential problems. Fortunately, any delays _should_ be consistent so can easily be compensated for - but check that too!
