A follow-up:

I was contacted off-list, and it looks like things are going ahead - we have permission from one of the PIs for the recording, and there is not really anything else for me to do now apart from hope it all happens, and eventually receive some soundfiles. Time is tight. I am waiting for permission to say here who is doing it; suffice it to say they are local to Gran Sasso, are well equipped, and can act at short notice. It has all developed since this morning with a flurry of emails.

It appears that we can sample both the sphere (which will be filled with argon) and the enclosing water tank. An overview of the whole site is shown here:

Thank you to everyone who offered to help. I have had to act quickly so I could not really leave time for multiple offers to come in. And thank you also for the interesting discussion re argon acoustics etc! Whether it will ever be possible to run such a test actually in an argon atmosphere remains to be seen; I hope the physicists will be tantalised by the whole exercise, at least. One slightly interesting aspect is that it took a little while to explain exactly what we are trying to do - even today the PI felt it necessary to tell me that the detector itself, to be installed inside the sphere, will not make any sound of its own. So possibly the concept of sampling an acoustic is not as familiar to physicists as we might all assume! So anyone living close to a large particle physics research installation should henceforth be prepared for the call, some day, some time.

So, if this does happen, I hope it may help to alert physicists to the possibilities, to ensure that whenever they make a large cavern or container, they get its acoustics sampled as a matter of course! Whether there is a paper to be written about this exercise remains to be seen...

The news report says the detector (including, presumably, the argon)
will be placed inside "in the next few weeks", which is pretty vague,
but implies it will all be up and running by April. I hope to get some
more inside info on the real timetable, but this does suggest there is
unfortunately not much time to play with.
