Hi Steven, 1. Identical speaker will be preferable - but, and I know some will disagree, not essential. 2.The speaker layout - if you use max tryout ICSTs plugin which let you specify the speaker layout and are reasonably flexible. 3.Things can translate well from small setups to big ones - I have designed stuff in my room on monitors and then played it back on PA speakers spread out over an acre - but the layout should be the same and be prepared for a lot of tweaking on the scaled up version due to different room reflections, absorbtion etc. 4. You can use all your samples with max and logic - you can have the outputs of logic going into max for example and then pan the original stereo samples around using ICST or a vst plugin such as wigware.
I found ambionics isn't the wonder spatialisation tool I thought it would be - its great for somethings but its also good to combine it with vbap. The other good thing about ICST max externals is that you can change the directivity (ie the sound can come from many speakers or just one or two depending on how you set it) good luck !
