The minimum is (M + 1)^2 for 3D, and (2 * M) + 1 for 2D, but - You better use at least on more, - For 3D, the minimum is 8, even for first order. That is because the the equations above assume a systematic decoder, but a decoder should be systematic only at LF, and for anything based on energy vectors the angle between the speakers can't be too big.
