If you want an 8-ch 'B format' then dropping R is the obvious
choice. The result is a mixed order 2h1v format. It preserves
full second order resolution in azimuth, as R doesn't depend
on it, and compromises only on resolution in elevation.

This will match most real-life reproduction systems quite well,
many practical speaker layouts have problems with full second
order but will handle 2h1v quite well.

For a microphone one practical consequence would be that you
shouldn't use it in 'endfire' mode.
