But SoundForge, for instance, actively blocks the opening of files with the amb GUID, so yes, progress of a kind; and the ability to use the spectral editing facilities on a multichannel file counts a lot for me.

You can create a Multitrack session, the choices for "Master" output are
just: Mono, Stereo, 5.1. Individual tracks can be mono or stereo.

I challenged a senior developer on this, and he replied:

"You can use files of any channelization within your multitrack session, but the track and master outputs will always be either Mono, Stereo, or 5.1 for this release."
