Yes, I have been using Comcast for quite some time.  Apparently, sometime in late Sept. Comcast/Xfinity changed their security settings, including the Port number, from 587 to 465. This invalidated outgoing emails.  A problem is that they never got around to telling their tech support people about this.  I spent quite a few hours on the phone with the Xfinity tech folks. They were never able to make contact with anyone from Mozilla. It looks as if 'Jim' ran into the same problem. I'm fortunate in that Stan recognized the problem and knew the cure.

I understand that this same error is happening to a number of Mozilla emails, e.g., Thunderbird.  Some entry in the Preferences section must be changed to avoid this.  Can anyone help.  If not, I'll have to say goodbye Mozilla.

Does this mean you are using Comcast?  Or is this a problem with another SMTP account? There have been a couple of similar requests here recently, one of them was "problems sending email" by "jim" 8 days ago. My guess would be that Comcast have changed their requirements. Go to their site and check what they now require for Thunderbird. To actually make the change, you want "Mail and Newsgroups Account Settings..." (there are a couple of ways to get there) and then go down to "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" and "Edit" the necessary.

There were two threads here in the last few days of September:
Yahoo e-mail not working with SM v.2.49.4 and
Yahoo e-mail not working with SM v.2.49.5

(both by Henrik37) where Yahoo / AT&T imposed requirements which cannot currently be met by Seamonkey, Thunderbird or (older versions of?) Outlook.  The requirement was OAuth2 (which SM and TB offer) but with some extra wrinkle.  If Comcast are going the same way you really need to look at those threads, in particular the 2.49.4 one.
