I notice you and rickman are running 64 bit Windows.
The last time I used SM 2.40 on Windows XP I never saw the problem.

My current OS is the i386 build of Debian 9.1 (Stretch) and SeaMonkey
User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:51.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/51.0 SeaMonkey/2.48
Build identifier: 20170706221455

I've been using the Linux flavor of SeaMonkey since 2014 without problems.

SeaMonkey/2.46

If you are still on 2.46 try 2.49.1

The TB devs fixes several race conditions. Before 2.49 I had numerous
problems with crashes and other anomalies. Mostly with an imap account
but news should also benefit.

A large newsgroup was somehow corrupted and now I will have to
unsubscribe and resubscribe to that group loosing all the info on what
I have read and not read. Sometimes this program sucks! :P
