I doubt very much SeaMonkey is the culprit.
I date back to days of Netscape 4.? and have not had a similar problem.

As a workaround I would suggest going to "Server Settings" for the affected news server. Record the information listed for "newsrc file: and "Local directory:". Then, with SeaMonkey shutdown, routinely backup that file and that directory.
