Apparently you are mean a SOCIS2016 - welcome! :)
I hope your college is in the EU (I mean any country, who has membership in
ESA) because SOCIS has limitation for participants.
Kindly help me out to get started and suggest some good patch,or I will

We have some common suggestion for preparation of proposal/application in
section "Suggested workflow" on the page
http://www.stellarium.org/wiki/index.php/Summer_of_Code_in_Space_2016
It's good point of start. IMHO at first stage for you can be very helpful
create a build environment for Stellarium and build it from source code
(instructions you can find on our wiki).
Traditional second step for GSoC/SoCiS students - understanding code - you
can read developers documentation and you can try fix one-two simple bugs.
For you it will be preferred fixation bugs in SolarSystem/Planets modules -
https://bugs.launchpad.net/stellarium/+bugs?field.searchtext=&orderby=-importance&field.status%3Alist=NEW&field.status%3Alist=OPINION&field.status%3Alist=CONFIRMED&field.status%3Alist=TRIAGED&field.status%3Alist=INPROGRESS&field.status%3Alist=INCOMPLETE_WITH_RESPONSE&field.status%3Alist=INCOMPLETE_WITHOUT_RESPONSE&assignee_option=any&field.assignee=&field.bug_reporter=&field.bug_commenter=&field.subscriber=&field.structural_subscriber=&field.tag=solar-system+&field.tags_combinator=ANY&field.has_cve.used=&field.omit_dupes.used=&field.omit_dupes=on&field.affects_me.used=&field.has_patch.used=&field.has_branches.used=&field.has_branches=on&field.has_no_branches.used=&field.has_no_branches=on&field.has_blueprints.used=&field.has_blueprints=on&field.has_no_blueprints.used=&field.has_no_blueprints=on&search=Search
Of course, if you have technical troubles with both steps - please ask
members of our team (through IRC/maillist/email). I think maillist will be
preferred in general tasks - because other students can have/was having
similar problem and it can be helpful for you, plus you can find
GSoC/SOCIS-related discussions from the previous years. ;)
Third step - make some investigation for tasks that looks interesting to
you - common/specific algorithms, technical limitations and some sketch on
the theme "how it should work". When you will be make this investigation
you will get certain understanding of the problem and certain questions.
OBJ reader already implemented in Scenery3D plugin and look to the code of
the plugin will be really helpful :)
