As we've found out (Alex & I), this is working. At least on linux. The
OpenGL subsystem needs to be initialized, and once I added that, the
crashes disappear. Alex is trying Windows now.
This would just be a stop-gap, assuming it works on Windows. We need to
replace all non-ES OpenGL code.
