I also get something similar - a sharp drop in FPS on the Moon and
nebula textures. The framerate in both cases jumps back to more
acceptable values when I turn off the atmosphere. I suspect that the
culprit is either the atmosphere drawing code, or the
refraction/extinction simulation.

(This is on Windows, Intel Atom 1.66 GHz, 1 GB RAM, Intel GMA 3150.)
