I am not sure how much the json module is maintained, iirc, jansson module came
from the same developer/company as a better alternative, but that apparently
does not have transformations, but functions for extracting fields from json.
Saying it just to have eventually a discussion about this module, if it is
maintained/used.
Anyhow, I looked at the code and the json-path is internal implementation,
probably with some coding support for escaping/quotting can be added, if
someone wants to do it. For now, after some clean up, I was able to add quite
easy an alternative to allow specifying the separator for the path:

You can try to see if suits you, but being a new feature is not considered for
backporting.
