Hi James, You're not missing anything - you're correct. Standard design area density curves (e.g., 0.30 gpm/ft² over 2000 ft²) do not apply to EEGAP rack storage. This type of commodity has a very high heat release rate, and NFPA 13 recognizes that area-density curves aren't suitable for:
* Rack storage * High challenge plastics * ESFR protection * In-rack sprinkler configurations Instead, Chapters 25 through 27 of NFPA 13 (2022 or 2019 edition) outline specific protection schemes tailored to: * The type of plastic * The storage height * The rack configuration * The ceiling height * The presence and arrangement of in-rack sprinklers Regards, Yasser Amer From: James Crawford <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, April 28, 2025 11:10 PM To: Discussion list on issues relating to automatic fire sprinklers <[email protected]> Subject: [Sprinklerforum] Exposed Expanded Group A Plastics ! External Email, Use Caution ! We are looking at a refrigeration storage facility that is looking at a new client and they want to make sure they can use the space and asked s to have a look. The new client will be storing fish in exposed expanded Group A plastic coolers, and these will be stored on single, double and multi row racks. The existing sprinkler system is designed to 0.30usgpm over 2000 ft² plus two levels of in-rack sprinklers. I cannot find any protection schemes for design area applications that will provide protection schemes for the exposed expanded Group A plastics. Is there something I am missing or can someone point me in the right direction. Thank You James Crawford Phaser Fire Protection Ltd.
